WORKS
TROPICAL ESCAPE - BY ÉLODIE BERNARD, CURATOR
Using a recognizable palette of bright colors, Julie Susset superimposes and creates a dialogue between memories of nature that she invents. Public parks, tropical greenhouses, and trees lining city streets are all small microcosms built and ordered by humans, which the young painter seizes upon to create her pictorial material.
Painting became a necessity for Julie Susset from childhood onwards. Carried away by travel in her younger years, she returned to painting full-time when she settled back in Paris, finding new inspiration in representations of plants. She recognized the anxiety that big cities can cause for artistic creation. A need to escape, therefore, a need to return to simple things. In her “all-over” paintings, where the paint splashes, flows, and stretches, it is a question of material, color, and above all, gesture. With the great freedom offered by the medium of painting, Julie Susset questions our fantasies, the way our imagination constructs them and sometimes saturates them with idealization.

"I PAINT AS I LIVE"
"I paint as I live! Instinctively, spontaneously, and rather freely! There are no plans, no rules, even if I do have a few rituals. My memories and emotions serve as my starting point, then I paint urgently, in one breath... I always listen to music when I work in my studio because I like the idea of transcribing the energy of the moment (and its rhythm) into a fluid movement, like a dance. In addition to brushes, I use my fingers, palms, and forearms to achieve the effects I want. My whole body is at work.
My painting is an endless series! But in the broad sense of the theme, not in the sense of scenery or landscape. Plants are only the final visible layer on my canvases. Hidden behind the attractive colors and dreamlike landscapes is, above all, human nature, very much alive and with its many emotions... I have a childlike wonder at the beauty of nature... which commands respect and humility."
